Private Calendar
End-to-end encrypted

Encrypted calendar. Your appointments remain private.

Each appointment is encrypted on your device before it is synced. The server only stores ciphertext. Only you and the people you share a calendar with can read it.

What is encrypted

What makes up your calendar is encrypted.

We also say what the server sees. An account needs an email address and sign-in details – it doesn’t need your appointments.

End-to-end encrypted

  • Title, location and description
  • Date, time and recurrence
  • Tasks and reminders
  • Calendar and master key (only encrypted on the server)
  • Links to external iCal subscriptions and their content

Visible to the server in plain text

  • Your email address
  • Calendar IDs and which month a block belongs to
  • When you changed something
  • Who you share calendars with
  • Sign-in times with IP address; for Premium, also subscription and billing data

The complete list, including instructions for testing, is under Check encryption yourself.

Features

Everything a calendar needs – without spying on you.

Appointments, tasks and reminders, neatly organized. And underneath, an architecture that treats your privacy not as an option, but as its foundation.

Store and sync end-to-end encrypted

For storage and synchronization, your events are encrypted on your device before being sent to the server. Calendar and master keys reach the server only in encrypted form, never in plain text.

This is how Private Calendar protects your appointments

Encrypted before it leaves your device.

Calendar content is stored as encrypted blocks. With external iCal link subscriptions, the server receives neither the private link nor the source content in plain text.

Encrypted on your device

Every appointment is encrypted locally with AES-256-GCM before it is synchronized.

Sync encrypted

The server only stores calendar content as encrypted blocks. Link subscriptions are loaded directly from a signed-in Android device or iPhone.

Only you have the key

The key stays with you. Without it, the data remains permanently unreadable – for everyone.

Check open source cryptography yourself

The published security modules are open source under Apache 2.0. Source code, specifications and verification steps are available.

Pricing

Both plans use the same end-to-end encryption. Premium increases limits and adds iCal subscriptions, which the Android and iPhone apps retrieve directly and encrypt before synchronization.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know.

What does “end-to-end encrypted” mean?
Data is encrypted on your device before storage and synchronization. Your calendar and master keys are generated there and reach the server only in encrypted form; your password protects access to them. Events, tasks and their details synchronize as encrypted calendar blocks. Neither the operator nor anyone who obtains the database can read those blocks. Decryption takes place locally on your devices and, for explicitly shared content, on recipients’ devices. This uses AES-256-GCM and local key management whose source code is published for review.
Can the operator read my appointments?
No. The server only receives appointments, tasks and their details as encrypted blocks. The keys are created on your device and only reach the server encrypted. What the server still sees, such as your email address and change times, is listed in full under Check encryption.
What happens if I forget my password?
Then you restore access with the recovery key that you receive when registering. Without a password and recovery key, the data remains unreadable, even for us. So keep it safe.
What encryption is used?
AES-256-GCM for the content, PBKDF2 and HKDF for the key derivation, plus optional two-factor authentication. Cryptography specification and source code are published: View source code.
Can I use Private Calendar for free?
Yes. The free plan includes two calendars of your own and 25 MB of storage, with no time limit. That's enough for tens of thousands of appointments, or ten appointments per week for many decades. Premium is optional, increases limits and adds features such as calendar sharing, iCal subscriptions and booking links.
